And here we are again at the end of the year – The stark reminder that we spent another year coming last, our aspirations pushed to the side as life kicked in and we forgot that we have needs or desires. As we sit here, a bit heavier, a tad deflated and absolutely exhausted, we ask ourselves:
“How did we get here?”
Promises were made and we were excited for this new lifestyle filled with healthy habits and adventure – “New Year, New Me” . This was our year and nothing was holding us back, until:
Everyone else got involved…
Family: The First Intruders
We love them but they’re annoying – they overwhelm us with their presence, always wanting stuff. It begins with something innocent enough and we optimistically tell ourselves:
“little mate needs help with his homework, it won’t take long and then I’ll go for a walk after”
Before we know it, an hour has passed – We’ve finished a math tutorial, courtesy of YouTube, helped the kid out and now we’re in the kitchen cooking dinner, re-emerging well beyond any reasonable walking time and with only one option available to us — To sit on the couch with wine and completely engross ourselves in whatever’s playing on TV.
And the excuses begin…
“It’s the middle of the week, I’m tired, I’ve already blown the plan, there’s no point in starting now, I’ll start next week”
Work: The Main Culprit
It consumes way more of our life than it should. It’s the main reason we end up burnt-out at the end of every year. It reminds us that we’re absolutely determined to break free from this rat race — But never do.
Instead, we let it push us well past our limits.
We work beyond our paid hours and hide behind thinly veiled excuses – “we’re doing it for our own sanity, we love our job and if we just do a couple of extra hours then we won’t be so stressed”, yet deep down we all know that’s a lie. Before we know it, we haven’t walked in weeks, our diets consist purely of high sugar foods and when was the last time we washed our hair?
Now we’re falling asleep on the couch, the wine has gone and we’re too tired to move.
And the next excuses start…
“It’s busy at work right now, I’ll have more time for myself later – I’ll start then”
Comparison: Keeping Us Real.. Un-happy
There is nothing more damaging to our well-being than comparing ourselves to others, taking everything they present as truth while knowing we wear a mask to hide our insecurities – Not for a second thinking that they’re doing the same thing.
We’re envious of their drive to act, while we make every excuse for why we don’t.
The year is in full swing, we’re:
- Looking after the family
- Working more than we should
- Continuing to neglect ourselves
All while being envious of Joan down the road. She’s exercising every day, getting away on mini breaks and feeling GREAT about herself.
And the excuses continue…
“Joan has so much time and money, if I had that too I would also be able to look after myself better”
It’s clear that we face some challenges and overcoming them requires a proactive approach. Instead of dwelling on what holds us back, let’s shift our focus to positive changes.
